Our lifestyle undoubtedly affects the state of the brain, but this is felt later in life when things are almost irreversible.

New scientific claims on the subject summarize that we are not just the result of genes, but that we can influence the length of life and its quality through our actions and choices. Just as we take care of our appearance and try to slow down aging through various aesthetic methods, the same effort, and even greater, should be made for the he alth of the brain.

A workshop organized by the Women's Alzheimer's Movement USA, attended by neuroscientists and brain he alth experts, discussed the ways we can support the brain and protect it from future damage and disease.

These are their main recommendations to follow every day for a he althy and well-functioning brain.

Drink better quality water

The brain is 80 percent water and therefore its dehydration is a serious problem. According to Dr. Lisa Mosconi, author of the book Brain Food, quoted by, even just 2% water loss can lead to neurological symptoms such as fogginess, fatigue, dizziness and confusion.

“Research shows that dehydration literally causes the brain to shrink,” she says. "And it happens to everyone, whether you're 20 or 90."

The science behind this claim is that minerals that dissolve in water like sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium form electrically charged electrolyte particles called ions that help hydrate the brain.This highly mineralized water is called hard water and is found, for example, in Italy, where Dr. Mosconi grew up.

Do workouts that make you think

Just because we don't see our brain the way we see our body and its shape doesn't mean we shouldn't train it. People go to the gym to have he althy and beautiful bodies, to enjoy them. However, it is equally important that our brain is he althy and in good condition.

This means that the next time you do physical training, you should not do the exercises mechanically, but build a program in your mind, which exercise comes after which, how it will help you shape your figure, what will be the benefits for the body from him.Brain activity must be in sync with physical activity to keep both body and mind fit.

Another option is when you do some routine exercise, change it slightly, do it from a different angle, because that way you again burden the brain to configure a new position and be active.

Dancing is great exercise, for example, because it challenges coordination and requires you to memorize certain steps and movements, stimulating your neuroplasticity.


Consume he althy fats and try fasting

The expression "brain food" is not accidental. In recent years, not one or two studies have shown results that the more he althy and balanced we eat, the more the length of life and its quality are extended. He althy food also affects brain he alth. Just as we save for retirement, so should we save for our he alth in old age.

In order to balance blood sugar, which, if it is in high levels, creates prerequisites for dementia and Alzheimer's disease, it is important to include he althy fats in your menu, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They help keep you full throughout the day, and he althy fats are also considered nerve-protecting.

Intermittent fasting also has its beneficial benefits for the brain. The idea is that when you drastically reduce the food you eat in a short period of time, the risk of brain inflammation is reduced.

If you have trouble sleeping, get help

The brain needs a good night's sleep every night - this is the brain's 'cleaning' time, which means that all the connections we made during the day need to be adjusted - some memories to be kept and others to be discarded.

Sleep is also the time when toxic substances are cleared from the brain. Therefore, sleep deprivation can have a strong negative effect on the he alth of the brain and body. According to research in the field, at least 15 percent of dementia is directly related to sleep.

Consume estrogen-boosting foods and test your hormone levels regularly

Study shows that estrogen is a hormone that has a strong neuroprotective effect. Therefore, the drop in estrogen levels that inevitably occurs in women as they age can put the brain in a vulnerable position and more susceptible to disease. According to Dr. Mosconi, women have been shown to have a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's than men. And the risk begins mostly when women are preparing for menopause. "When women are in their 40s, the brain starts to look like they're aging faster compared to the brains of men who are the same age," says Mosconi.

There is another fact that proves this: approximately every minute a person with Alzheimer's is diagnosed, 2/3 of them belong to women. Maria Shriver, the ex-wife of the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, started this association - Women's Alzheimer's Movement precisely for this reason: the female brain has been scientifically proven to be different from the male, and therefore it is necessary to have a different approach to it.She shared, "I always say it's not sexist to study the female brain, it's just smarter because it's studying what the greater percentage of diseases are rooted in."
