We love wisdom. They have gathered in themselves many truths about life that we sometimes fail to notice. Some wisdoms are inspired by one's great encounters, such as that of Shams al-Din of Tarbiz or Shams Tarbizi, who was a dervish, Sufi poet, mystic, and the Persian poet and theologian Rumi. They spent their days together in long conversations. Shams shares his 40 rules that talk about God, love and that transformed Rumi's life. For Rumi, this is one of the most significant meetings. Today in our Proverbs, Wisdom, Quotes column, we share some of the 40 rules of Shams.

Mind and love are made of different dough. Mind binds man and exposes itself to no dangers, while love unravels all knots and exposes everything to danger. The mind is ever cautious and advises, "Beware of too much elation," while love says, "Oh, ride! Get scared!". The mind is not easily broken, while love can turn to rubble in an instant. But it is precisely among the ruins that treasures are hidden. A broken heart hides untold riches.

East, west, south, north - it's all the same. Wherever you go, just make sure that every journey is a journey within you. If you travel inward to yourself, you will travel the length and breadth of the world and reach beyond it.

The midwife knows that if there is no pain, the child's passage cannot open and the mother cannot give birth. In the same way, to give birth to a new Self requires suffering. Just as clay must pass through a hot fire to be tempered, so Love can only be perfected in pain.

Searching for love changes us. Whoever sets out to search for Love matures along the way. The moment you start looking for Love, you start changing inside and out.

There are more false leaders and false teachers in the wide world than there are stars in the visible firmament. Do not make the mistake of considering self-absorbed power-lovers as your mentors. A true spiritual master will not direct his attention to himself and will not expect from you complete obedience and admiration, but will help you to appreciate and admire your true self. True mentors are transparent like glass. They let the Light of God pass through them.

Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead, let life live through you. And don't be afraid that your life is turned upside down. How do you know that what you're used to is better than what's to come?

If you want to change the way how others view you, first change the way you treat yourself. If you don't learn to love yourself sincerely, to the end, you can't be loved.Once you reach that stage, however, be grateful for every thistle that others may throw at you. This is a sign that you will soon be walking under a shower of roses.

This world is like a snowy mountain, where the echo of your voice resounds. Whatever you say, good or bad, will come back to you. Therefore, in the event that someone thinks evil of you, you will only complicate the situation if you start slandering him. You will enter the vicious circle of revenge. That is why for forty days and forty nights he spoke and thought good things about this man. At the end of the forty days, everything will be different, because deep down you will be different.

Don't be afraid of where the road will take you. Instead, focus on the first step. This is the most difficult part, and it is for this that you bear responsibility. Once you take the first step, let everything follow its natural course, and the rest will take care of itself. It doesn't go with the flow. Be the current yourself.

Fate doesn't mean that your life is predetermined. Therefore, it is a sign of complete ignorance to leave everything to fate and not actively contribute to the music of the universe. This music is all-pervading and consists of forty different levels. Your destiny is the level where you will play your tune. You will hardly change the instrument, but it depends only on you how well you will play.
