Postpartum depression affects many mothers around the world right after giving birth. It turns out that this kind of disorder can also befall dads, even though they haven't actually given birth.

This is according to a study conducted at the University of Southern California.

Postpartum depression affects about 10% of American dads. We can guess how many fathers in our country suffer from this postpartum disorder given the standard of living.

The study also found out what is the main cause of the appearance of postpartum depression in fathers. It, like that in mothers, is due to hormones.Changes in testosterone levels play an important role in the adaptation processes, whether dad will bond in the first months after birth or feel overwhelmed.

Researchers looked at the cases of 149 couples. The results are published in the journal Hormones and Behavior. They show that dads are most at risk of postpartum depression, whose testosterone has suffered a serious drop in the last months before and after the birth.

The lower the testosterone levels, the more severe the depression.

The study found another curious result. Women whose husbands experienced a drop in testosterone report that they themselves had a happy postpartum period and did not suffer from postpartum depression.

Scientists urge against taking testosterone supplements to compensate for its deficiency, because results show that this approach makes fathers more aggressive and hostile towards their partners.
