Associate Professor Jan Chinar from the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery to answer our questions about facial rejuvenation.
“Cosmetic plastic surgery improves people's sense of well-being by correcting distressing flaws.”
Cosmetic plastic surgery is concerned solely with the improvement of that part of the human body where irregularities, whether age-related or otherwise, are distressing and oppressive.
In short, while the primary goal of reconstructive plastic surgery is to restore the integrity and functionality of the body, cosmetic plastic surgery is about improving people's sense of well-being by correcting worrisome flaws.
What is the purpose of facial rejuvenation?
In today's society, people are aware that the best they can wear is their youthful appearance. The most effective way to achieve it is through facial rejuvenation. The goal of facial rejuvenation is to give a person a youthful and natural appearance, and the goal is to erase the signs of age on the face.
What are the main signs of facial aging?
Specialized assessment and analysis of facial aging is essential for successful facial rejuvenation. Not every face shows the same signs of aging. When analyzing the signs of aging on the face, we usually divide the face into 4 parts – the forehead, eyelids and the area around the eyes, the cheeks and the mid-face, including the cheekbones, and finally, the lower jaw and the neck area.
Aging can be different depending on age, environmental factors and genetic characteristics. In general, the most common indicators of aging are wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, drooping eyebrows, bags under the eyes, sagging cheeks, sagging lower jaw lines, and sagging neck.
What factors affect the deterioration of the aesthetic appearance of the face?
The factors are many. Generally, these are the factors that enhance aging. The most serious of these are smoking and exposure to ultraviolet rays.
We have heard a lot about the different methods of rejuvenation - botox, plasma gel, fillers, laser skin rejuvenation, peeling and endoscopic procedures. What is the difference between these methods?
With the exception of endoscopy, they are all non-operative methods of facial rejuvenation. Botox and fillers are among the most powerful weapons in non-operative rejuvenation methods. Their ease of application and the rapid return to work that can be achieved through non-operative procedures have made them the most popular options.
If performed by competent and experienced experts, these procedures offer high levels of patient satisfaction. Endoscopic methods offer modern and effective solutions, especially for patients looking for a younger appearance in the areas around the mid-face and forehead. These procedures involve an incision below the hairline using a surgical camera and specialized equipment.
That's why it's known as the "scar-free facelift". This method can provide particularly satisfactory results for middle-aged patients without excessively sagging skin. “..not just rejuvenation but skin regeneration.”
Does cosmetic facial rejuvenation have other benefits besides making the face look younger?
One of the leading causes of facial aging is volume loss. This is why fat injection procedures have gained such popularity in recent years as a method of facial rejuvenation.Advances in application and fat grafting techniques have greatly increased the satisfaction and long-term effectiveness of these procedures.
What's more, the stem cell-rich injected adipose tissue provides not only rejuvenation but also skin regeneration. This advancement has also led to the concept of "self-rejuvenation and beautification from your own fat tissue," which is an important element in various facial rejuvenation methods.
And what about facial mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a method of rejuvenation that involves microinjection of medicinal preparations in the facial area. However, this method should be approached with caution, to the extent that the safety and reliability of medical preparations for mesotherapy have not been scientifically proven.
All patients should be extremely careful before deciding to be injected with a drug in the face, regarding the content of the injected substance and the training and experience of the mesotherapist. Otherwise, unwanted results are difficult to reverse.
Which rejuvenation procedure do you use most often?
Facial rejuvenation procedures can be classified into two main groups: cosmetic facial surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. The main condition for successful results is that the patient's facial characteristics must be analyzed within the context of their expectations of the procedure under consideration, which will lead to the determination of the most appropriate method (or methods).
The final choice is always made after discussing every single detail with the patient, including the recovery period and how long the effect will last. The recovery periods are short, with a quick return to work.
Which facial rejuvenation procedures are offered at Yeditepe University Hospital?
We apply all types of facial rejuvenation that are scientifically proven, safe and effective. Patients can return to their normal daily routine after a one-night stay in the hospital.
What is the recovery period after face lift surgery?
Depends on the type of facelift surgery. For example, while the recovery period after full facelift surgeries is 10 – 14 days, the recovery period after midface and neck lift surgery is 7 – 10 days.
Patients can return to their normal daily routine after a one-night stay in the hospital. Thanks to modern techniques, the effectiveness of facelift surgeries are long-lasting nowadays.
Are there operations or patients that occupy a special place in your mind? And if so, could you please tell us about it without revealing patient-doctor confidentiality?
Every single facial rejuvenation patient is special and unique. For me, the greatest satisfaction is seeing a patient's face beaming with happiness and confidence after the rejuvenation procedure.
