We are used to believe that sugar causes the greatest damage to he alth. Our body suffers, the body develops all kinds of diseases and conditions due to the excessive use of sugar.
Doctors are scaring us with the growing threat of diabetes as it has become the disease of the last few decades. And they are right. It is true that many diseases are associated with sugar abuse, but is it all true?
There are many myths and misconceptions about sugar that we will introduce you to and debunk.
People can easily limit their sugar intake
We know we need to eat less sugar. There is no mental problem with that, or at least for some. But in practice this is almost impossible! Very few people manage to resist the limit of full. Why is this so?
Studies show that sugar consumption causes a tendency to overeat and overindulge in sweet treats. Overconsumption usually goes with a strong attack of thirst, which complicates the picture.
The brain gets used to the intake of sugar and acts on the principle of drug addiction. Furthermore, brain tissue feeds primarily on carbohydrates. Research shows that sugar and sweetness can be even more addictive than drugs.
Added sugar is bad for he alth
Added sugars are found in many products on the market. They are used to flavor foods, drinks, syrups, even in s alty products as flavor stabilizers.
However, you don't have to eliminate all added sugars from your diet. Sugar may not have any nutritional value, but it can spice up the flavor of your cereal or yogurt, for example. So, it's important to be careful about the amount and type of added sugars, rather than cutting them out altogether.
Artificial sweeteners are better than sugar
This is the biggest fallacy that should be completely debunked by now, but many people continue to trust sweeteners, unfortunately.
It is true that calories are avoided when artificial sweeteners are consumed, but experts believe that the long-term effects of their use are detrimental to the pancreas as well as other organs and endocrine glands.
Artificial sweeteners give a false signal that "energy" is getting to the brain via the regular route that sugar does. This provokes the secretion of enzymes that break down sugar, and it is practically absent.
This in turn triggers an even stronger hunger pang some time after consuming a food or drink with artificial sweetener.
Organic sugar (unrefined) is he althier than regular
Raw sugar seems so attractive to many people because the myth is spread that it is he althy and does not have the negative effects of refined sugar.
This is not true. Although these types of sugar are found in he alth food stores, they are in no way superior to regular sugar. The difference is that raw sugar is boiled only once, but it is prepared from the same raw materials – sugar cane and sugar beet.
And since it's only brewed once, it causes some producers to add molasses to it to give it its characteristic golden color and sticky texture. Some studies claim that molasses has valuable substances that our body needs. But most experts believe that only traces of these nutrients remain in sugar, which do not provide any nutritional value to the body.
Also, research shows that both refined and raw sugar have the same number of calories, which in no way makes raw sugar any better.
Diets that exclude sugars are the he althiest
This is beyond false! Sugar, no matter how much harm it can cause, is still needed by the body in small amounts. Its complete exclusion leads to a change in the chemical composition of the body.
From another point of view, to completely eliminate sugar from your diet, you will have to consume tasteless products. So many people turn to foods labeled "sugar-free." They suggest artificial sugar substitutes, the harm of which we have already mentioned.
Sugar causes cavities
We are used to thinking so, because that is the propaganda on this matter. The dentists, the ads for anti-cavity chewing gum - we get the same information from everywhere that sugar spoils the teeth.
This is true, but only in cases where the sugar spends too long in contact with the teeth.
The plaque that accumulates on the tooth enamel is what causes tiny holes in the tooth, into which food enters, and through it, sugar. This is how the actual decay occurs, not because of the sugar in the first place.
The conclusion is to brush the teeth as well as possible, so that harmful substances such as plaque and tartar do not accumulate.
Sugar causes hyperactivity in children
All mothers have heard this myth. Most even believe that their children become too excited after eating sweets.
There is extensive research on the link between sugar and hyperactivity. The conclusion is that sugar does not affect the behavior of children, except for a small number of them.
