Cruise stars as Ray Ferrier, a divorced dock worker and not the best father. A little later, at an intersection near their house, Ray witnesses an unusual event that will change everyone's lives forever. A huge three-legged machine emerges from the bowels of the earth and before anyone can react, it incinerates everything around it. An ordinary day has suddenly turned into the most extraordinary experience of their lives - with the first attack of the catastrophic alien invasion of Earth. In a determined attempt to save her children from a ruthless new enemy, Ray sets out across the devastated countryside where he encounters a desperate crowd of refugees trying to escape the alien tripod army. But no matter where they run, nowhere is safe, and nothing can help them…except Rey's unstoppable will to protect those she loves.
