Aliens conquer cinemas together with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. This time, the guests from outer space are not friendly, as in previous Spielberg masterpieces. "War of the Worlds" is an extraordinary thriller, showing the battle for the future of humanity through the eyes of an American family fighting for its own survival.
Cruise stars as Ray Ferrier, a divorced dock worker and not the best father. Soon after his ex-wife (Miranda Otto) and her new husband drop off their teenage children Robin (Justin Chatwin) and daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) for one of their rare weekend visits with their father, a strange and very intense lightning storm hits. A little later, at an intersection near their house, Ray witnesses an unusual event that will change everyone's lives forever. A huge three-legged machine emerges from the bowels of the earth and before anyone can react, it incinerates everything around it. An ordinary day has suddenly turned into the most extraordinary experience of their lives - with the first attack of the catastrophic alien invasion of Earth. In a determined attempt to save her children from a ruthless new enemy, Ray sets out across the devastated countryside where he encounters a desperate crowd of refugees trying to escape the alien tripod army. But no matter where they run, nowhere is safe, and nothing can help them…except Rey's unstoppable will to protect those she loves.
“War of the Worlds” marks the second collaboration between Spielberg and Cruise after “Special Report”. "We've known each other for many years, but this film brought a whole new direction to our director-actor relationship," commented Spielberg.“He's a very intelligent, creative partner, and he's constantly coming up with great ideas. I love working with Tom Cruise."
First published in 1898, the novel War of the Worlds by H. J. Wells, tells the remarkable story of the alien invasion. It has become a literary classic. The frightening picture of how our planet has been conquered and to the invaders, ordinary people are no more important than ants, has lost none of its impact in the century since its creation.
