Announcing the start of her campaign on Twitter, Nixon, 51, said her top causes included improving he alth care and a "broken" subway system.

The actress will compete for the Democratic Party nomination in September with current New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. The election for a new state governor will be in November.
Cynthia Nixon is from New York, has three children, a daughter and a son, from her previous partner, teacher Danny Moses, and has a son with her current wife, Christine Marinoni. The two ladies tied the knot in 2012. Since 2008, Nixon has also been an activist in the fight against breast cancer after she herself was diagnosed with the disease in 2006.
